Life coach, anyone?

A family friend who has a private practice sent me this as encouragement:

  1. Good encouragement! I don't think people (myself included) think enough about their reasons for pursuing a doctorate. Despite the humor of the video, however, I didn't find it very accurate in terms of the financial picture it paints. If you go to a low-tier school that churns out degrees, you may run into the debt/loan problems (and this is a real concern even at a top-tier PsyD program). But if you go to a large research university, you can almost always get your PhD tuition waved and by being a TA/RA concurrently, you can get a monthly stipend. I'm not saving a lot of money, but I'm not accruing any debt either. And as long as you get into a good school, you shouldn't ever be in a situation in which you are receiving vacuous feedback from someone you don't respect.
